Hide Desktop Icons

The ability to hide the desktop icons is pretty neat if you have a lot of icons on your desktop. I'm a bit of a minimalist myself, but my dad has managed to fill the desktop with icons. He's recently discovered dual monitors and my guess is he'll fill both up.

Disable Sticky / Filter Keys Popup

Have you ever been doing something and the annoying Sticky Keys warning popups in the middle of the screeen. You press No and it goes away.

It's a pretty helpful accessibility feature for some people, but a real in pain in ass for the rest of us.

Stop Windows Update from Automatically Restarting Your PC

I sat down to work the other day and realized I'd lost about two hours of work because my computer had been automatically rebooted after a Windows update. Another thing I can't stand is how Windows used to constantly remind me that I needed to reboot my computer as if I needed to be told every five minutes or that there was some chance that I would never reboot my computer and these crucial updates would never be applied.

Disable Caps Lock Key in Windows 7 or Vista

I'm not a very good typist. Despite having worked as a reporter and technical writer I still have to look at the keys when I type. So, if I accidently hit the Caps Lock key I inevitably look up at what I've been typing and see two or three sentences in all caps as if Im shouting my point. The Caps Lock key has for most purposes becaome useless. It can of course be disabled.

Windows 7 may have some problems running older applications that worked fine in XP. A lot has changed in Vista and Windows 7. Thankfully there's a way to get around this, though not guaranteed.

Before trying this however, you should try shutting off visual themes or running the app as Administrator. This is particularly useful with games.

Start Explorer from My Computer

If you spend more time manipulating files outside of the documents folders than inside, you might want to change the default starting directory for Windows Explorer so that it opens at the Computer node:

To do this, navigate to Windows Explorer in the Start Menu (it's in the Accessories folder). Then edit the properties and change the target to read:
